HUDSON & HALLS LIVE!
By Kip
Chapman with Todd Emerson and Sophie Roberts
After being shaken up like a good martini in Wellington and winning a bevy of Wellington Theatre Awards at the end of 2016, Silo Theatre’s smash hit comedy HUDSON & HALLS LIVE! returns to Auckland 27 June – 9 July at Q Theatre as part of a national tour celebrating the company’s 20th anniversary. In its Auckland premiere, HUDSON & HALLS LIVE! delighted audiences and critics alike – selling out, extending its season and winning a top prize at the 2015 Auckland Theatre Awards. In 2017, take a seat in a 1980’s TV studio for a mid-winter Christmas special and a glimpse into the grand journey and epic love story of two of New Zealand’s most iconic TV personalities - Peter Hudson and David Halls.
And we’re
live! The oven’s caught fire, David is drinking and Peter
has bad news. In the closet with the door wide open, Peter
Hudson and David Halls were New Zealand’s original great
gay love story – and two of our greatest entertainers.
Prepare for big laughs, rum-fuelled showdowns, and some very
questionable cooking.
Commissioned by Silo
Theatre and co-created by theatre-maker Kip
Chapman, this immersive work explores the
extraordinary on-screen and off-screen partnership of New
Zealand’s beloved TV chefs. In the spirit of the men
themselves, Chapman has created a theatrical experience
outside of the norm. Audiences arrive at the theatre to find
themselves transported back to the 1980s, cast for a night
as the live studio audience from the moment they walk
through the doors. This production is all about extending
the audience experience beyond the walls of the black box to
create a truly memorable night filled with chaos, charm and
live cooking.
“Laugh? This play is so funny you could die of it…It’s silly, and also complex, and very moving, all at once. Theatre rarely gets much better than this.” – Metro Magazine
Director and co-writer Kip Chapman is a powerhouse of ingenuity and productivity who has created exceptional theatre with immersion and a sense of fun at its heart. HUDSON & HALLS LIVE! follows his other immersive production APOLLO 13: MISSION CONTROL which toured nationally and internationally to great acclaim. In 2015 and 2016, he also helmed the hit New Zealand musical, THAT BLOODY WOMAN. This year, Kip also joins WOW – World of Wearable Arts as their Creative Director.
Reprising their roles, Todd Emerson plays Peter Hudson and Chris Parker plays David Halls. Todd has been acting in New Zealand for over twenty years. His recent credits include the kiwi musical DAFFODILS and TV3’s WESTSIDE. Wunderkind Chris Parker has been described as the next big thing in New Zealand comedy and is a regular writer and performer for TV3’s JONO AND BEN and FUNNY GIRLS. Completing the cast as Ngaire Watkins – the show’s slightly-out-of-her-depth floor manager is Anya Tate-Manning (PUPPET FICTION and AN HOUR WITH ACKBAR).
Topping it all off with a wonderfully nostalgic and kitsch design is an incredible team: set designer Daniel Williams (PERPLEX, SUNDAY ROAST), costume designer Elizabeth Whiting (PERPLEX, VENUS IN FUR) and lighting designer Sean Lynch (THE BOOK OF EVERYTHING, BREL).
