The hottest theatre event in the Southern Hemisphere, Pop-up Globe, together with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra today announce a very special performance, AUCKLAND PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA LIVE AT POP-UP GLOBE.
The event will be held on Sunday, 23 April – Shakespeare’s birthday.
To celebrate, a 17-strong ensemble of New Zealand's leading musicians, alongside cast members from Pop-up Globe's 2017 season, will perform a selection of music and verse inspired by Shakespeare's most famous plays.
The selection of works will include music which Shakespeare himself might have heard in Elizabethan England along with later composers who were inspired by the Bard. It will feature music by composers such as William Byrd, John Dowland, Henry Purcell, Thomas Arne, Ralph Vaughan Williams and William Walton.
Pop-up Globe artistic director Dr Miles Gregory says he is thrilled to be collaborating with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra on such a special day.
"Many of Shakespeare's play are heavily influenced by music so it's only appropriate to have such highly talented musicians and actors celebrating his life in this way. It's a birthday event not to be missed."
APO's director of artistic planning, Ronan Tighe says that there is such a wealth of wonderful music written by great composers, inspired by the Bard, that the challenge was knowing where to start.
"We’ve come up with a stunning programme of musical works, perfectly suited to the Pop-up Globe’s beautiful theatre. The music ranges from works by composers who were writing when Shakespeare’s plays were first performed at the original Globe theatre in Elizabethan England to specially arranged works from the 20th Century. This will be a very special event for the legions of music lovers and theatre buffs."
Join us on Sunday 23 April at Pop-up Globe, the world's first full-scale temporary working replica of Shakespeare's theatre, the second Globe.
The special event follows last week’s announcement of another, a special one-time-only event The Actors' Benevolent Fund Afternoon Gala at 4pm on Sunday, 2 April, featuring a stellar line-up of New Zealand entertainers including Dave Dobbyn, Lucy Lawless, Shona Laing, Jennifer Ward-Lealand and many others.
The Pop-up Globe company has gifted the venue to Actors’ Benevolent Fund – a not-for profit charity established in 2013 to provide assistance to professional performers who, due to injury, illness or disability are unable to work, either temporarily or in some cases for the rest of their lives -- and all profits will go direct to the fund.
The special 90-minute show, MCd by comedian Michele A'Court, will be in the format of a variety gala and feature our own royal family of entertainers. From music and dance to poetry and comedy, this event will have something for everyone.
Confirmed artists and acts appearing during this performance are: Michele A'Court, Dave Dobbyn, Lucy Lawless, the Jubilation Choir, Shona Laing, Dynamotion, Stephen Lovatt, Jennifer Ward-Lealand, James Roque, Jesse Griffin, Tandi Wright, Fiona Samuel and The Black Quartet.
Tickets to both events are on sale now via Eventfinda.
