Operatunity raises $11,000 for Sistema Aotearoa so far in 2017.
During their recent Waltz of My Heart tour, which featured Sistema Music Director Jessica Hindin, Operatunity patrons
donated money and instruments to the Ōtara based Sistema Aotearoa. As of this week, concert-goers have donated $11,000
instrument and over 50 instruments which were languishing unused in cupboards and attics across the country.
Sistema Aotearoa’s Musical Director Jessica Hindin has been a regular fixture for Operatunity concerts; but these days
her busy schedule means that she can only do one concert tour per year, and this January she toured Waltz of My Heart to 24 centres across New Zealand along with her tenor fiancé Bonaventure Allan-Moetaua.
“I only do one daytime concert tour a year so this is a nice contrast for me and it’s really fun touring with my partner
and getting to spend time together”
Sistema Aotearoa focuses on children with the fewest resources and greatest need and engages with, and delivers across,
diverse sectors within the Ōtara community. Having begun in 2011 with 95 students, in 2017 over 1100 young people
between 2yrs- 14yrs will receive high quality musical instruction within a safe, and supportive atmosphere. The Sistema
Aotearoa programme helps these young people develop aspiration, concentration, leadership skills, and confidence. The
programme has proven impact on the parenting skills and involvement in their child’s education with young people more
focussed on their learning and their parents more involved with supporting their child. Students score more highly in
reading and mathematics after 2 years in the programme, than children not participating - and that advancement is
maintained. In short – it gives the kids involved a kick-start in their lives.

like your audience and organisations like Operatunity in the community is humbling and very encouraging. Without it we
simply wouldn’t be able to offer these students this chance’ said Sistema Programme Manager Ros Giffney.
