Celebrity Comedian Stands up Against Sitting Back

Well-known Kiwi comedian Ben Hurley (7 Days) has gathered a posse of like-minded comedy vigilantes, determined to make a stand (up) against injustices in the world. Over three nights, Friday 31 March, Saturday 1 & Sunday 2 April, Auckland’s Classic Comedy Bar will host an exceptional line up of professional comedians donating their time and talent to raise money for three worthy causes: RainbowYOUTH, Women’s Refuge and the Asylum Seekers Support Trust. These NZ based charities will receive 100% of proceeds from ticket sales.

Ben feels a bit helpless. The world seems to be moving in a strange direction and what can we do? Share another article on Facebook? Get in another dinner party argument? Unfortunately, posting a news articles about injustices in the world with a sad face emoticon below doesn’t change much. Ben might feel helpless but he’s not alone! He’s rallied his fellow comedians to help him make a proactive change to those who need it most.

The three charities were selected to represent some of the communities Hurley sees as being at most risk in the current political environment. RainbowYOUTH is dedicated to helping young queer and gender diverse (LGBTIQ) people, Women’s Refuge aims to prevent and stop family violence in New Zealand, and the Asylum Seekers Support Trust works to create a safe and supportive environment for families who have escaped life-threatening danger and are desperate for a safe haven.

“It feels like the world has gone nuts recently and all I can do is watch. I’m not really qualified to do anything useful so I’m taking the only action I can take, raise some money by putting on some comedy gigs”, says Hurley, “I have two young daughters, and I don’t like the world I see waiting for them. So these events are about getting Aucklanders to put down their devices and connect with each other, to make a stand against all that is going wrong in the world and to help their fellow humans. With generosity, not just Facebook posts. And we’ll have a bit of a laugh along the way.”

Hurley will be joined on stage by, arguably, one of the biggest and best comedy line-ups ever assembled in New Zealand. Including Jeremy Corbett (7 Days), Cori Gonzalez Macuer (What We Do In The Shadows), Dai Henwood (7 Days, Family Feud), Michele A’Court, Wilson Dixon, Te Radar, Paul Ego, Justine Smith, Brendhan Lovegrove, Jeremy Elwood plus a lot of the new up-and-coming talent including Pax Assadi, Melanie Bracewell, Eli Matthewson, David Correos and The Fan Brigade.
