Decadent delights on offer at MOTAT’s Prohibition Party

Be swept up in the exuberance and freewheeling popular culture of the roaring twenties at MOTAT’s inaugural Prohibition
Party on Saturday 4 March.
Aimed at all revellers over the age of 18, this event is promising a sparkling assortment of live music, dance, vintage
vehicles, fashion, cocktails and much more. Visitors are invited to step back in time to a period of dramatic change; a
decade of post-war pleasure seeking where many rejected existing moral standards and rebelled against the prohibition of
alcohol. And so the era of flappers, the “speakeasy”, gangsters and the scandalous Charleston was born.
Visitor Engagement Manager, Sarah Somerville says that MOTAT has received numerous requests for themed events over the
years but this is the first time the Museum is hosting a party of this kind. “Most of our events are very family focused
so we wanted to offer something a bit different specifically for our grownup audience,” she says. “People love the drama
and decadence of the twenties and so we are hoping they really get into the swing of it and come dressed up in their
glamorous Gatsby best.”
MOTAT’s historic buildings and streetscapes form the perfect backdrop for vintage games on the lawns and the Model A
Fords on display. There will be fashion and jewellery workshops, a pampering Powder Room for hair and make-up tips and
fabulous fashion shows presented by Glory Days. Highlights of the evening are bound to include the casino room named
after “Nucky” the infamous Atlantic City racketeer, jazz bands and racy burlesque performances.
Nothing represents the 1920s quite like the Charleston. It saw men and women shedding the stodgy etiquette and dance
styles of previous generations to kick up their legs with abandon. Special dance lessons will give guests the chance to
let loose and try out this popular dance craze, or just stand back and enjoy the spectacle if they prefer. There will
also be costumes and props supplied for many memorable photo opportunities.
So for anyone looking for a unique night out, MOTAT’s Prohibition Party is the place to be on Saturday 4 March from 7 –
11pm. Costs are $20 for adults and $15 for students or SuperGold card holders (plus booking fees). There will be no door
sales but tickets and further information are available through the MOTAT website
