Angus Gordon tells of Hawke’s Bay’s ‘Famous Times’

New book offers look back on beauty, best times of historic woolsheds

HASTINGS, New Zealand – Angus Gordon chronicles and celebrates the beauty and best times of the historic woolsheds of the Hawke’s Bay area which has been such a famous sheep farming area for over 160 years. “Famous Times” (published by Xlibris NZ) is a record of a time, now past, when life was simpler but also more elegant.

This book is a photographic record of historic buildings which are unique to New Zealand. Each woolshed, all of which are used for shearing sheep, is different from the next. Gordon also shares a small history of each.

However, many of these sheds have now disappeared, replaced by modern, rather soulless corrugated-iron sheds, but as the author already knew, there are an awful lot of still very well-maintained historic sheds. This book is a tribute to the farmers who have clung on to their land so tenaciously over the years of diminishing returns and diminished size and have still maintained these sheds, which are now treasures of Hawke’s Bay that not many people are aware of.

“This is a record of a sunset industry which is still struggling to remain relevant in these changing times of sustainability, compliance, falling prices and the migration to the cities,” Gordon points out. “I want to give readers an appreciation of the achievements of our ancestors.”
