Are you the next Artist in Residence?

Innovative and intrepid artists have only two weeks remaining to apply for the 2017 Auckland Council Artist in Residence programme.

The selected artist will live and work for an eight-week period in either Long Bay Regional Park or Mahurangi Regional Park (Te Muri Beach) from mid-October to mid-December 2017.

The residency is open to all experienced artists, including writers, poets, composers, choreographers and visual artists.

Proposals can focus on any aspect of the applicant’s preferred residency site. Artists might consider concentrating on a single object, a significant natural or man-made feature, or on something conceptual.

Artist in Residence Coordinator Michelle Edge says the selection panel is looking for applications that are innovative and reveal unusual or overlooked aspects of parks.

“The residency is perfect for independent and adventurous artists who want to immerse themselves in their surroundings and in a new project,” she says.

“It provides them with the opportunity to have time and space away from their usual life and to divert their attention and energy to a new space and place,” she says.

Councillor Penny Hulse, Chair of the council’s Environment and Community Committee,says the Artist in Residence programme is an experience of a lifetime.

“Being embedded in a park day in and day out, the artist will see their environment in all its moods – seasonal, tidal and weather conditions – which provides plenty of stimulation for the creation of new, inspiring work,” she says.

The artwork generated is shared with the public during or after the residency. This might be via an event, installation, concert, performance or publication.

The 2016 Artist in Residence Kate Parker has her Anawhata residency-inspired work currently being exhibited at the Arataki Visitor Centre until 26 February 2017. The exhibition tells a story through 10 intricate, miniature paper worlds, which play with outlines and layers, and shadows and light to create 2D whimsical pictures.

About the Auckland Council Regional Parks Artist in Residence programme

· Artists venture into our regional parks to generate new, original artwork to share with the public;

· The programme is open to artists working across various media – previous residents include poets, installation artists, composers, photographers, filmmakers and painters;

· The residency is for an eight-week period from mid-October to mid-December 2017;

· On-park accommodation is free and a weekly grant is paid for materials and expenses;

· Artists need to be independent, flexible, mature and self-sufficient;

· The residency moves every year to generate awareness about different parks;

· Artists must be New Zealand-born or have New Zealand residency.
