CHARMIAN HUGHES- SOIXANTE MIRTH
What would happen if you met your younger self? Have you turned out to be the person the old you wanted you to be?
From the London comedy circuit, 60 year old British comedian Charmian Hughes has come all the way to New Zealand to help you find the answers in a hilarious and touching comedy trip where stand-up meets time travel, as she encounters earlier versions of herself and faces those awkward questions- ‘What happened to my dreams?’ and ‘What the heck are you wearing?
Nominated best comedy Buxton Fringe UK July 2016.
Do you ever wonder what would happen if you could meet your younger selves? How you’d give them advice, warn them, encourage them, comfort them, put them on the right path, but more than anything, impress them with how you’ve turned out… so cool.
But how would you feel if they answered back….and it turned out your idea of cool is their idea of hell. Your ten year old self wanted a calm, tweed- wearing Middle Age, tending rescued pets and being dignified, not yelling at Breaking Bad and throwing shapes on the dance floor.
Well Auckland! Now all your wondering comes to life in a new show by British comedian Charmian Hughes (‘like Josie Long’s mum! ‘Chortle’).
60 year old Charmian has come all the way to New Zealand to help you find the answers to the big question: how did we turn into the people we never intended? Charmian explores the idea of Ageing, what we think of it when we are young, and the reality of it when we actually get to experience it. The heart is the show is when Charmian encounters her younger selves at crucial times in her life- at 10, when we all still have dreams, at 14, when your ideas about yourself start slamming into reality, and 25, when you don’t know who you are anymore or where you are going.
And intertwined into this story is another story, about how a country Charmian had never visited- your country, New Zealand! - stepped in and saved her sanity and her personality, 35 years before she even ever got here!
‘A lovely show... Charmian is the poster girl for the natural sexagenarian and time spent with her is a joy… a genuinely enjoyable watch’ Kate Copstick, The Scotsman. (Edinburgh Festival 2016) ‘A mirth-filled 60 minutes’ Buxton Fringe Review 2106 ‘Charmian delights as a performer... a joyous and fun hour. ’Lynn Parker, Funny Women (Edinburgh Festival 2016) ‘Lovely lines and surprises… a charmingly scatty chatterbox’ Bruce Dessau beyond the Joke (Edinburgh Festival 2016)
Edinburgh Fringe audiences 2016 said: ‘Insightful, crazy, lovely!’ James Alan. ‘Inventive, extremely funny!’ Wilf Hashmi, ‘Roaring with laughter! Cath Powell. ‘Blasts off into hyper-mirth’ Tom McKewan.
Charmian is a veteran of the British comedy circuit- ‘Charming ribaldry’ (The Guardian), ‘Like Josie Long’s mum’ (Chortle) ‘Obviously talented’ (The Daily Telegraph). Charmian has taken 6 solo shows to the Edinburgh Fringe and emceed the world famous Glastonbury Festival 5 times!
