NZ’s Sistema Aotearoa Music Director Jessica Hindin stars in Operatunity’s ‘Waltz of My Heart’.
Jessica Hindin is the Music Director for Sistema Aotearoa, an Auckland based initiative which uses orchestral music-making as a means of social development.
Based upon Venezuela’s immensely successful El Sistema programme, which has been running for over 30 years, Sistema Aotearoa began as a trial in South Auckland in April 2011. Almost all of the children were aged between 5 and 8 years of age and nearly all were from Māori, Samoan, Tongan, Niuean or Cook Island families and there are now around 400 children from many South Auckland schools taking part. Jessica was appointed Musical Director in 2015, but was involved in the programme as a tutor since its inception. In addition to concert performances Sistema students take part in collaborative projects in theatre and dance, chamber ensembles and more.
Jessica returned home to New Zealand after almost 6 years of extensive touring, encompassing 5 continents, which included television appearances in Great Britain, Europe, USA and China. She has performed on stage alongside well-known entertainers including Harry Connick Jr and Elaine Page, and Kiwi singers Boh Runga, Hayley Westenra and Ladyhawke. She has performed with the Auckland Philharmonia, and her string quartet has been part of the band for many other televised shows including New Zealand’s Got Talent, and X Factor.
