Hammer handy women asked to step up to the challenge
Mitre 10 is calling for Kiwi women to show off their home improvement skills at this year’s Mitre 10 NZ Women’s DIY Challenge.
This is the second year of the Women’s DIY Challenge, a two-day event hosted at the Hilux New Zealand Rural Games, where three of NZ’s best female DIYers compete in a series of DIY tasks with the winner taking home a $1000 Mitre 10 voucher.
Last year’s champion, Sarah Coatsworth, was a self-taught DIYer from Rotorua who impressed the judges with her building skills and wasn’t afraid to give anything a go.
“I was up against two worthy competitors and even though we weren’t quite sure what to expect from the challenge we all had a lot of fun,” says Sarah.
“Any woman who loves to do a bit of weekend DIY should definitely have a go, it was a wonderful weekend.”
Mitre 10 General Manager Marketing, Dave Elliott, says that while home improvement is still seen by many as a man’s domain, the success of the Women’s DIY Challenge and Mitre 10’s Ladies Nights proves that females are a growing force in DIY.
“Our research shows that a huge number of Kiwi women are running the show when it comes to DIY and this challenge is an awesome showcase of their skill,” says Mr Elliott.
Each Challenge finalist, along with their chosen female assistant, will compete head-to-head to construct and decorate a playhouse. The top two scoring finalists will then race to complete a final fence-building challenge to be crowned the champion.
The finished playhouses will be given away to local schools and charities at the end of the weekend.
The 2017 Hilux New Zealand Rural Games, a weekend event of traditional sports that is billed as a showcase for ‘sports that built the nation', will be held in Palmerston North on March 11 and 12.
To register to become a finalist for the Women’s Challenge applicants can complete the survey at www.mitre10.co.nz/ruralgames. Applications close on February 6 2017.
