The Race of the Year is on ‘Kahungunu Kapa’
New Year’s Day Sunday 1st January 2017

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated is pleased to be sponsoring Hawkes Bay’s Race Day which takes place on the 1st January 2017.

The annual event attracts people of all ages and ethnicities. The event includes racing action, live music and all-day kids entertainment, making it the perfect family day out.

We honour the late Kahungunu horse trainer and respected New Zealand equestrian identity, Eric Ropiha, who was one of the best-known Māori figures in horse racing and who was inducted into the Māori Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Eric was the owner and owner-trainer of many top gallopers and developing jockeys, he was also renowned in equestrian sports as a trainer, breeder and coach.

This inaugural event has been named ‘Kahungunu Kapa’ in light of the Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Event which is being hosted by Kahungunu on the 22-26 February 2017 at the Hawke’s Bay Sports Park.

The iwi is providing the winners trophy for this race. The trophy is a Tewhatewha which is a long-handled club that is shaped like an axe, formerly used in battle. The Tewhatewha is an indicator weapon which dictates strategy in battle and competition. As New Year approaches, the tewhatewha will be used as a pointer for things to come.
