Is This New Zealand’s Most Expensive Christmas Mince Pie? Baking Industry Association Sells $500 Pie for Charity.
The Baking Industry Association’s, “Christmas Mince Pies for Charity,” auction closed at midnight last night, with closing bids climbing into the hundreds of dollars for each batch of pies.
Breakfast TV presenter, Jack Tame’s, baking effort came out on top, bringing in $500. The final bid came in at $255, but the winner later rounded the amount up to $500. Newshub’s Samantha Hayes earned $300, as did Brodie Kane. Daniel Faitaua’s sold for $271, and Al Brown’s Fig and Cranberry pies racked up $250.
Winning bids came in from Auckland, Wellington, Timaru, Napier, Kerikeri, and even the UK. The total proceeds, which will be donated to The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal reached $2932.
The Baking Industry Association of New Zealand approached 15 Kiwi celebrities to bake a batch of six pies, including Antonia Prebble, Jono and Ben, Paul Ego, Simon Gault, Michael Meredith, Jesse Mulligan, and Hilary Barry.
Trade Me waived all success fees, and Auckland freight company, E-pack will be couriering the pies to the auction winners free of charge.
Kevin Gilbert, President of the Baking Industry Association of New Zealand said:
“We are absolutely thrilled with the results of our first, “Christmas Mince Pies for Charity,” fundraiser. The generosity of both the bidders and the bakers has been overwhelming. Every batch of pies cracked the $100 mark. We can’t wait to get the pies out to the winners – we’re sure they’ll enjoy them!”
The organisation is hoping to run the campaign again in 2017.
“It would be fantastic to build on this year’s success, and attract even more celebrity bakers in 2017,” said Kevin. “It has been such a fun, and exciting way to raise money and awareness for a great cause.”
