The NZSO invites families for free Christmas sing-along
This year the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is putting a Christmas spin on their annual free concert at Te Papa. They invite people of all ages to join them on Saturday December 3 for a day of music, laughter and Christmas spirit.
In a full day of fun, the morning kicks off with a free concert featuring Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man and excerpts from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Perfect for families and young children, this concert will get you toe tapping and maybe even dance a Can-Can.
The ever-charismatic Chris Lam Sam will bring fun and flair to the day. This composer, writer and performer will lend his multitude of talents as narrator and compere.
Leading the orchestra is conductor Hamish McKeich, who has forged an impressive international career alongside a passionate loyalty for developing contemporary and experimental music in New Zealand. Recently, he has been named the NZSO’s Associate Conductor for 2017.
In the afternoon, the NZSO invites you become a member of the NZSO Pop-up Carol Choir. Come along to a carol workshop with Chris Lam Sam and Hamish McKeich to hone your skills and learn the lyrics, then join the orchestra to sing along to some of our favourite Christmas carols. Carols include Twelve Days of a Kiwi Christmas, Te Harinui and medleys of festive favourites. Singers of all ages and skills are welcome. For those not keen on singing, just pop by to enjoy the afternoon carol concert.
Keen to practise? Lyrics are available for download from nzso.co.nz
This day is made possible by support from the Wellington Community Trust and the Macarthy Trust.
