MEDIA RELEASE NOVEMBER 2016
Waitomo in a New Light
Award winning photographer to showcase his stunning shots of Waitomo at Waitomo Homestead this December
The anniversary of café and venue "Waitomo Homestead" will be celebrated this December with a free pop up exhibition of award winning photographer, Shaun Jeffers’, work.
The exhibition, named ‘Waitomo in a New Light’, will showcase Shaun’s photography of the region and will open on December 1st at The Waitomo Homestead.
Shaun has been capturing Waitomo on camera for the past year and his work has received considerable attention including recently winning the Landscape Category at The NZ Geographic Landscape Photographer of the Year 2016 for his stunning shot of the glowworms at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves.
To capture the winning shot Shaun abseiled 35 meters into a cave and made several dives through underwater passages - then set up his gear in pitch-black, chest-deep water, for a six-minute exposure.
Shaun’s unique pictures of Waitomo and its glowworms have been covered by international media around the world. This is the first time the photos have been exhibited together for public to view.
Shaun Jeffers says, “Waitomo is one of my favourite places in the world to photograph. The unique landscape of Waitomo Glowworm Caves makes it visually mesmerising and challenging to capture – but the final results are worth it.”
Waitomo Homestead opened in December 2015 providing tourists and locals a welcoming gateway to the Waitomo area.
John Robson GM of Discover Waitomo, says, “We are honoured to hold Shaun’s exhibition at the Waitomo Homestead this December. His incredible photography is helping us demonstrate through visual storytelling the sheer beauty of the region – and we’re thrilled to be able to showcase these incredible photographs to the community. The pictures are something we can all be very proud of.”
The anniversary of the Waitomo Homestead café and venue will be celebrated on the first weekend of December with the exhibition available to view, along with a number of special treats including bouncy castle, face painting, pony rides, animals and as always, Homestead hospitality.
John says, “We’re really proud of the atmosphere and level of service we’ve created at the Homestead – from great coffee through to weddings and events. We encourage people to come and check it out.”
The “Waitomo in a New Light” exhibition will open at a special event on Thursday December 1st for invited guests. It will then be open to the public free of charge throughout the month of December.
Waitomo Homestead is located at 584C State Highway 3, Waitomo 3977.
