Mint exhibition open to the public

Media Release: For Immediate Release

Norah Maclachlan’s collection combines knitted wool with woven materials. It allows her the freedom to create random unstructured pieces. She discusses the importance of her craftwork is the connection she has with her mother and through the design of the work her memory is kept alive. Norah’s garments tell a narrative and when constructing she recites her story. Through each piece she offers the wearer the opportunity to tell their own tale.

Mint exhibition open to the public

Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology invites all connoisseurs of the creative arts to the inaugural Mint Graduate Exhibition, showcasing the formidable talents of the graduating Bachelor of Creative Industries students.

The Mint Graduate Exhibition delivers the future of art and design, where contemporary fashion pieces, seemingly more at home on the catwalks of Paris and London than the streets of Tauranga, sit alongside edgy and raw graphic art pieces. Eco-designers rub shoulders with documentary styled photographers – some pieces shocking, some playful and all evoking strong emotion.

Located in the Project Room (a pop-up exhibition space in Tauranga’s Red Square), the Mint Exhibition will feature everything from screen printing, graphic design installations, moving image, zines, photography, fashion and more.

Graphic Design student Hannah Wynn developed the ‘look’ for the exhibition and accompanying catalogue. She says Mint is a chance not only to show off their latest work, but to reflect on the last three years of study and celebrate as she and her fellow students head into the workplace armed with their new qualification.

Many of us already have jobs in the creative sector, which is extremely exciting,” she says. “The Degree has allowed us to fully immerse ourselves into the local and national creative community which has opened up so many doors.”

Mary Stewart, Group Leader Culture, Design and Humanities at Toi Ohomai (formerly Bay of Plenty Polytechnic) says the third year students have produced work of outstanding scope and calibre.

“Having worked closely with industry partners over the last three years has meant our graduating students have received critical feedback on their work and ideas allowing them to develop their art practices, as well as bringing them into the network of creative industries.”

The Mint Graduate Exhibition opens on Friday, 18 November from 5pm – 7pm. The sold-out fashion show will be held at the Tauranga Art Gallery from 7pm and will be live-streamed to the Cornerstone on the Strand. Members of the public are welcome to view the exhibition which will also be open from 10am – 2pm this Saturday and Sunday at the Project Room (pop-up exhibition space in Red Square) in Tauranga’s CBD.

A showcase of work and profiles of the graduates can be viewed online www.mintevent.co.nz

Helen Knight’s latest work showcases long exposure and light through the use of still photography and video. The images capture a step-by-step movement of the dancing light creating intricate patterns. Her practice incorporates photography, moving image and performance, with her installation bringing together all three elements.
