Top Kiwi Pub Quizzers Keen to Taste Success AT 2016 NZ Champs
A record number of top pub quizzers will battle it out for the New Zealand title this weekend, with some new twists set to tease their brains.
Tickets to compete in the 17th annual SKY TV Pub Quiz Championship at Auckland’s Alexandra Park function centre on Saturday (12 November) have sold out, with a record 63 teams of eight looking to topple last year’s winners Irrelephant. So keen to defend their title, they were the first team to enter.
But they will need to keep their wits, as well as their pencils, sharpened, as other entrants include members of the Auckland University and AUT University Challenge teams plus Mastermind winner William Barnes.
Teams will be tested across a range of genres by host and broadcaster Jason Reeves, with questions spanning history, science, geography, tv and cinema, music, food and drink, sport and the mysterious Taste Test.
The Pub Quiz Championship is organised by Believe It Or Not, which has been in a joint venture with SKY since mid-2014. Believe It Or Not has delivered multiple quizzes every week since 1998 to more than 250 venues in New Zealand, 120 in Australia and 25 in North America, and also devises the questions for Air New Zealand’s inflight quiz and University Challenge.
Believe It Or Not General Manager Brendan Lochead says: “The national championship is the pinnacle for the quiz teams and our company every year. We’ve got a record turn-out this weekend and competition will be fierce. We’ve also injected some new elements to ramp things up and really test the grey matter of our 500-plus quizzers.”
