National $10,000 AMP Scholarship Recipients 2016 Announced
2016 RECIPIENTS OF $10,000 AMP SCHOLARSHIPS ANNOUNCED
Ambitious Kiwis have been awarded $10,000 AMP Scholarships to Pursue Their Dreams
AMP has awarded more than $200,000 through its AMP Scholarships to 28 determined Kiwis who have the courage to pursue their diverse dreams and turn them into reality.
AMP Chief Customer Officer Jeff Ruscoe, says “This year we received more than 3,000 AMP Scholarship applications from courageous Kiwis from all parts of New Zealand. Their desire to succeed and to help others goes to the heart of AMP and the basis upon which we were founded more than 162 years ago – to help others protect and grow their futures.”
The 2016 AMP Scholarships applications were reviewed by judges including Dame Rosanne Meo; cofounder of 42 Below, Justine Ross; Dr Jane Magnusson, and columnist and entrepreneur, Mike Hutcheson.
Chair of the AMP Scholarships judging panel Dame Rosanne Meo, said “We’re very proud to provide a helping hand to these wonderful and inspirational Kiwis, whose journey in pursuit of their dreams will inspire and positively affect countless others in ways we can’t imagine.”
2016 AMP National Scholarship recipients are as follows:
· Deborah Lambie, a doctor and co-founder of LearnCoach, who is pursuing her dream of providing whānau, iwi, and community groups with education programmes that are tailored to meet their specific needs, and to make a difference in the lives and future of Kiwi students who currently leave school with no qualifications.
· Nina Griffiths is a Youth Community Worker who dreams of establishing a youth-run community centre and support group for suicide survivors and youth in the region.
·
Kanah Andrews-Nahu, a weightlifter, dreams of
representing New Zealand internationally and to continue her
training as she sets her sights on Olympic glory.
· Lisa Argilla, a Wildlife
Veterinarian, dreams of opening a wildlife hospital in
Dunedin to significantly improve outcomes for native
wildlife, like yellow-eyed penguins.
· Paris
Kirby, an artist, dreams of producing a grand-scale
solo exhibition of paintings inspired by New Zealand native
bush, to create thought provoking art and to become a role
model for young artists.
· Tessa Prebble, a podcaster, creates podcasts of stories about special needs children and their families with her blog and podcast, titled, “The One in a Million Baby”.
· Nicola Korck, an ice skater,
dreams of representing New Zealand at the 2017 World Junior
Ice Skating Grand Prix and to become eligible for the Junior
Worlds and Youth Olympics.
· Lorelle McNaughton, a musician, is partaking in music studies in Spain and dreams of becoming the first Kiwi to record a Spanish piano repertoire
· Paul Thompson, a youth-worker, plans on continuing to offer a safe home for vulnerable women in Wellington
· Isaac Rusholme Cobb, a 17-year-old fencer, dreams of representing New Zealand at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and then the 2020 Olympics
· Matt Strawbridge, a year 13 student with dyslexia, plans to continue pursuing his dream of running workshops and events to help connect with, inspire and to empower even more people like him to thrive.
2016 AMP Study Start Scholarship recipient:
· Jennifer Tregurtha, a student, plans on studying a Bachelor of Science while pursuing her dream of making dairy farming in the Canterbury region more environmentally sustainable
2016 AMP People’s Choice Scholarship recipient:
· Shanelle Smallman, a year 13 student, plans on studying a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Media, Film and Television Studies while pursuing her dream of becoming a journalist.
Applications for AMP Scholarships 2017 will open in July 2017.
