Long Cloud Youth Theatre presents: Invaders from Mars

Long Cloud Youth Theatre presents;

Invaders from Mars

It’s almost midnight. As the fog rolls in over the graveyard, thunder and lightning can be heard all around and there is something lurking there in the shadows. A glowing flying saucer appears from behind the clouds and slowly hovers overhead...This is the time of year when the devil and the boogey-man rise out of the darkness to wreak havoc, terrorise the population and fight for control of the world...(oh, and it’s also Halloween).

Invaders from Mars takes its inspiration from B grade sci-fi films of the 1950’s and their thinly masked fear of communists and other alien threats of the time to take the audience on a journey through the many guises of fear in our contemporary lives. Is fear learnt or innate? Are we truly living in a ‘culture of fear’? Can fear be a positive force in our lives? Is there more to be afraid of now than ever before?

Directed by Brett Adam, members of the Long Cloud Youth Theatre ensemble have created a funny, disturbing and enlightening work that weaves these and other questions together to create a unique theatrical experience. Encompassing scientific experiments, dancing parasites, bedtime stories, game-shows and alien autopsies, we hope that it will illuminate and alleviate your own fears, suspicions and phobias.

Long Cloud Youth Theatre is one of New Zealand premier performance ensembles for young people between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five. Its aim is create unique theatrical experiences for audiences that push the boundaries of theatre in ways that are relevant, entertaining and challenging.

Praise for recent LCYT productions;

One Hundred Reasons for War by Tom Holloway, NZ premier, 2016

Brett Adam has created a complex, engaging and clear delivery of what could be a fractured mess. At times chaos reigns but always for effect and not for noise. Each element of the production is very carefully crafted to ensure that each part supports the whole. The performances he gets from these young actors promises much for their future and the future of Long Cloud Youth Theatre.... In our current world, this is a timely production not to be missed.

A lot of the time I had no idea what was going on but I absolutely loved it!!!

Audience member

Seeing this show reminds me of how important it is to support Long Cloud.

Audienced member

Dead Men’s Wars by Ralph McCubbin-Howell, World premier, a collaboration with Canberra Youth Theatre, Australia, 2015

This is a play of ideas and opinion, staged with theatrical flair and performed with unswerving conviction and energy and flair by the tightly directed ensemble.

Peter Wilkins, Canberra Critics Circle

Live Acts on Stage by Michael Gow, NZ premier, 2015

A couple of times I look at the audience and I'm not the only one sitting riveted watching the action progress. Who needs True Detective and Wayward Pines when you have these original tales of lust, betrayal and vengeance?

Maraea Rakuraku, theatreview.org.nz

Live Acts on Stage is a treat to be savoured.
