[Polish Association] Media Release: Chopin brings a touch of the old to the new Great Hall
A Polish pianist who made his international debut at just 16 years old brings his incredible talents to the Great Hall
of the Arts Centre in October. Maestro Raphael Alexandre Lustchevsky has travelled the world since that day 20 years ago
and in that time has earned himself a reputation as an expert interpreter of Fryderyk Chopin’s works. Raphael is
considered by Steinway & Sons as one of the finest pianists in the world.
Christchurch has a rare opportunity to hear Maestro Raphael play thanks to the Polish Association in Christchurch, who
have worked hard to bring the pianist to the city to celebrate the recent re-opening of the Great Hall at the Arts
Centre.
“Before the earthquakes, we used the Great Hall as the venue to showcase our culture on two occasions, with tremendously
successful piano recitals by Polish artists in 2004 and 2010,” says the Association’s President Anna Gruczynska.
“With so much of Christchurch’s heritage perished in the February earthquake, we were keen to do our bit to ensure that
the Great Hall is restored by organising a fundraising concert for its benefit in 2011. Now that this has been
accomplished, we are delighted that the sound of Chopin’s music can once again be enjoyed in this beautiful venue.”
Lustchevsky will perform enduring classics and lesser known piano masterpieces in a programme comprising the music of
Frederic Chopin, Franz Schubert and works by Poland's Karol Szymanowski and Grazyna Bacewicz.
