Coming up at City Gallery Wellington | Last chance to see Sister Corita's Summer of Love and Francis Upritchard: Jealous Saboteurs
It’s the final week of Sister Corita’s Summer of Love and Francis Upritchard: Jealous Saboteurs , both exhibitions are closing this Sunday. It is also the final week to see Ira Cohen’s psychedelic film The Invasion of Thunder Bolt Pagoda.
This week events wise, it’s Gallery Babes and the first of three in the Contemporary Art Night School series on Wednesday, the 2016 Art Crimes Symposium takes place all day Saturday and the final exhibition tours of Jealous Saboteurs on Saturday and Sunday.
From Monday, all galleries will be closed until 18 November, reopening on Saturday 19 November with the major exhibition Cindy Sherman. (see full info below)
The closure will allow the Gallery team plenty of time to prepare for this exhibition from foremost contemporary photographer.
While the main gallery spaces will be closed, a pop-up Gallery shop and information desk will be open Monday to Saturday from 9am-4pm. This will be accessed through Nikau Café.

City Gallery will also be running a three-part Cindy Sherman 101: Contemporary Art Night School for those wanting to take a crash course in all things Cindy Sherman.

Sister Corita’s Summer of Love surveys the graphic art of Sister Corita Kent (1918 – 1986), an unsung figure in pop art.
Film Screening: The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda

A poet and publisher, photographer and filmmaker, Ira Cohen (1935-2011) spent the early 1960s in Tangier, hanging out with William Burroughs, Brion Gysin and Paul Bowles. His film The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda (1968) is a classic of counterculture cinema. This psychedelic romp includes sequences shot in a Mylar chamber.
Screening every day, one the hour between 10am and 4pm.

Reopening to the public on Saturday 19 November with the major photography exhibition, Cindy Sherman.
City Gallery’s main spaces will be closed to the public from 17 October – 18 November for the installation for the major exhibition Cindy Sherman.
The closure will allow the Gallery team plenty of time to prepare for this exhibition from foremost contemporary photographer Cindy Sherman. Featuring 50 works and a large-scale site specific mural, this is the biggest Cindy Sherman exhibition to come to New Zealand. This will be the first time her work has been shown here since the late 1980s and City Gallery will be the only venue.
While the main gallery spaces will be closed, a pop-up Gallery shop and information desk will be open Monday to Saturday from 9am-4pm. This will be accessed only through Nikau Café.

Nikau Café is unaffected by the closure and will remain open throughout. The closure will also not affect other Civic Square facilities.
