Entries are invited for Auction N4, our final auction of 2016, which will be held Wednesday the 30th of November at
6:30pm. This auction follows on from our August auction, which produced a number of record sales for individual artists
and achieved a sell-through rate of 83%.
Notable early consignments for Auction No4 include Boy Am I Scared Eh! (1997) by Peter Robinson, which engages with the troubled legacy of modernist multiculturalism in New Zealand by way of
Colin McCahon’s iconic 1976 painting Scared, a work featuring the words “Am I Scared Boy (Eh)”; Rangi Heke Tini, a 1999 work by Shane Cotton and an example of the blending of abstract and figurative motifs in the artist’s mature
style; and Motorway Journey, a 1970 work by Robert Ellis depicting the tectonic shifts in New Zealand’s urban landscape during the last part of the
twentieth century.
Robert Ellis, Motorway Journey, 1970, oil on board, 890 x 890mm
The catalogue also includes works by Tony Fomison, Dick Frizzell, Jason Greig, Bill Hammond, Paul Hartigan, Julian
Hooper, Agnes Martin, Karl Maughan, Seung Yul Oh, Joanna Margaret Paul, Ian Scott, Martin Thompson, Rohan Wealleans and
Mervyn Williams.
Auction N4 continues our policy of paying a voluntary resale royalty of 2.5% of the hammer price to any living New
Zealand artist whose works we sell at auction. This royalty is funded by the proceeds of our buyer’s premium, and thus
does not result in any additional cost for either the buyer or seller of the work. We are the first and only art
business in New Zealand to institute such a policy. At present, Bowerbank Ninow has paid, or is in the process of
distributing, a total of $13,622 in royalties to artists.
Shane Cotton, Rangi Heke Tini, 1999, oil on canvas, 760 x 1010mm
Peter Robinson, Boy am I Scared Eh!, 1997, acrylic and oilstick on paper, 935 x 670mm (illustrated in header)
The deadline for consignment is the 1st of November. The catalogue is limited to approximately 60 lots, and the included
artworks will be accompanied by commentary from leading New Zealand art writers and historians.
To discuss the placement of artworks into Auction N4, or any other future auctions, please contact Charles Ninow or
Simon Bowerbank. Prior to the auction Charles and Simon will also be travelling throughout the country to view potential
consignments. Their next trip will be to Wellington on the weekend of the 15th of October.
