Day 2 New Zealand Junior Nationals

Day 2 of the New Zealand Junior Nationals has seen some exciting matches between players and there have been some interesting results with only one more round of quarter finals left to be completed before the Semi-Finals kick off tomorrow (Saturday).

The Under 11 Girls draw saw the top seeds Maia Smales and Alyssa Davy take wins again today whilst in the Under 11 Boys the top 4 seeds Freddie Jameson, Oliver Dunbar, Chris Hebberd and Charlie Prince have all progressed into the semi-finals.

The Under 13 Girls draw saw the 1st and 2nd seeds Natalie Sayes and Sophie Hodges take wins in 3 whilst 6th seed Dileesia Henare and 5th seed Manaia Jade Peeti take wins over their higher seeded opponents Jade Stratford and Jena Gregory respectively. These two players fought hard to take wins in five with tense moments in their matches where it could have gone any way! The Under 13 Boys saw Mason Smales and Apa Fatialofa take wins in 3 whilst Noah Thomas the 4th seed had to take a hard fought win in 5. Luke Steyn the 6th seed upset 3rd seed Paul Moran in 3.

The Under 15 Girls top seeds Anika Jackson and Annaleise Faint looked convincing in their wins whilst local player Georgia Robcke took a win over 4th seed Anna O’Connor in 3. Georgia Fyfe had the toughest battle of the draw taking a win in 4 over another local Hayley Carson. The Under 15 Boys will play their quarter final matches early tomorrow morning.

The Under 17 Girls saw top seeds Nadia Hubbard and Rhiarne Taiapa looking too strong for their lower seeds taking their wins in strong 3’s. Winona-Jo Joyce ended Lauren Vodanovichs dream run with a win in 3 whilst Zoe Dykzeul was pushed hard by Kelsey Manuatu but it was not to be Manuatu’s day with Dykzeul taking the win in 4. The Under 17 Boys saw the top 4 seeds take wins in 3 and progress to the semi-finals comfortably.

In the Under 19 Girls Ellie Epke, Abbie Palmer and Kaitlyn Watts took their wins in 3. The battle of the quarters came between Mackenzie Johnsons and Lauren Crowhurst. It went game for game between these two, and with some great action from both it was not meant to be the day for Crowhurst with Johnson making it to the semi-finals. In the Under 19 Boys Finn Trimble and Sam Sayes took wins in 3 whilst Tyler Ranger and Scott Galloway took wins in 4 and the top 4 seeds progressed to the semi-finals.
Matches kick off at 8:40am at Hamilton Squash and Tennis Club.
