Pink light for breast cancer – NZ landmarks light up
Landmark buildings around New Zealand will light up pink from tomorrow, October 1, as part of the Global Illumination project to raise awareness of Breast Cancer Month – and this year, several new monuments have signed on to go pink.
Newcomers include the Auckland Art Gallery, Auckland Town Hall and The Civic
Theatre, Rotorua Museum, the Fanfare sculpture in Christchurch, and Queenstown’s SkyCity Wharf Casino. The new sites join regular participants nationwide, from the Old Municipal Building in Whangarei to the several sites in Christchurch. All up, 23 local landmarks will join more than 200 other iconic or historic structures around the world as part of Global Illumination, an initiative established by Estee Lauder Companies in 2000.
Auckland’s Sky Tower will be the most visible pink icon, due to its prominence on the Auckland skyline. New NZBCF ambassador, radio host Lorna Subritzky, will switch on the light. The Sky Tower will be lit from October 1 through to the Pink Ribbon Appeal on October 14 and 15. Whangarei, Auckland and Christchurch each have four monuments lit up, guaranteeing a pink view far and wide.
“Global Illumination reminds people of the significance of Breast Cancer Month and the battle to reduce the impact of the disease on New Zealand families,” said Van Henderson chief executive of the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. “We’re very grateful to all the councils and building owners who have agreed to light up pink. Their commitment will keep help raise awareness of all the fundraising activities going on in October.”
Funds raised through the NZBCF’s Pink Ribbon Street Appeal (October 14-15) and through community fundraising events around the country will go toward research into new targeted treatments, life-saving awareness and education programmes, and support for women going through breast cancer.
