"Her ethereal multi-tracked harmonies have the devotional quality of gospel choirs, and the oddball allure of Björk or Yoko Ono." - THE NEW YORK TIMES
This October, US experimental music sensation Julianna Barwick arrives in New Zealand for the first time, to perform in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. We are happy to now be able to announce the support acts for all three shows.
Wed 19 Oct - Whammy Bar, Auckland, with support from Seth Frightening
The music of Seth Frightening is complex and varied but also focused and direct to the point of rawness. His music tells stories with shifting, clouded characters and evasive narrative, speaking as much to our own lives as to the one he himself leads. This ability to connect, to draw listeners out of their ease and guardedness, speaks as much about the depth and richness of his character as to it does about his soaring and richly textured voice
Thu 20 Oct - Caroline, Wellington, with support from Long Distance
Long Distance is the new project of Wellington's Lucy Beeler, previously part of the now deceased Crystal Magic Records canon under the moniker lttle phnx. Her sounds are lo-fi low-key pop; keyboard confessionals undulating waves of maudlin-soaked reverb. Surging melodies and convenient preset-accompaniment short-cut through the familiar straight to the heart. Long Distance is currently working on a debut full length, out soon on Cursed Helm.
Fri 21 Oct - Darkroom, Christchurch, with support from Motte and Pale Blue Dot
The solo project of Anita Clark from Devilish Mary, Motte is reverb swamped violin through delay, recorded in the bedroom/somewhere in the tropics or a hothouse full of moths. Pale Blue Dot is Indi and Matt from Doprah making intergalactic ambient vibrations in the vein of Doctor Who and Brian Eno with electronics and found sound.
A world-wandering singer and composer with family roots in Louisiana, Julianna Barwick has spent the decade, in the words of The Fader "articulating the ineffable" through largely wordless soundscapes built around multiple loops and layers of her rural church choir trained singing voice. Over the course of three critically acclaimed full-length albums, various collaborative projects and several EPs, she's cultivated an audience across the globe, in the process locating herself within a similar set of spaces to those occupied by Grouper, Meredith Monk, Low and This Mortal Coil. Along the way, Julianna Barwick has played piano for Yoko Ono, performed at Carnegie Hall at the annual Tibet House concert with the Flaming Lips and Philip Glass, re-imagined of Bach's 'Adagio' from Concerto In D Minor and toured with Bon Iver.
With rave reviews for her new album Will coming in from Pitchfork, Resident Advisor, Spin, Tinymixtapes and Drowned In Sound, we look forward to presenting Julianna Barwick live in a series of intimate concerts for audiences in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in October.
