Top lead actors found on Lightbox

The 2016 Emmy Awards has revealed Lightbox is where to watch this year’s most brilliant performances with Rami Malek of Mr. Robot taking out lead actor in a drama series and Transparent’s Jeffrey Tambor winning lead actor in a comedy series.

This is the first Emmy for 35-year-old Malek. He is recognised for his portrayal of Elliot in Mr. Robot, a dark drama about an underground hacking group trying to eradicate the unfair imbalance of modern society.

“I played a young man who I think, like so many of us, is profoundly alienated. Unfortunately, I’m not so sure how many of us would want to hang out with a guy like Elliot, but I want to honour all Elliots, because there’s a little bit of Elliot in all of us,” Malek said during his acceptance speech.

Tambor claimed his second Emmy, both for playing transgender Maura Pfefferman in Transparent. The hilarious and thought provoking series follows a family coming to terms with having a transgender father.

Transparent won three Emmy’s tonight adding to its previous haul of five Emmys and two Golden Globes. Series 3 exclusively launches on Lightbox this Saturday, 24 September.

During his acceptance speech Tambor called for Hollywood to: “please give transgender talent a chance… I would be happy if I were the last cisgender male to play a transgender female.”

Transparent creator Jill Soloway was also honoured at today’s awards taking home the Emmy for directing in a comedy series.

“I’ve always wanted to be part of a movement. This TV show allows me to take my dreams about unlikeable Jewish people, queer folk, trans folk, and make them the heroes,” she said after accepting the award.

Spark Media CEO Kym Niblock says she’s thrilled to see two of her favourite actors emerge victorious.

“I didn’t know much about Rami Malek before watching Mr. Robot but his breakthrough performance has made me his biggest fan – he thoroughly deserves his first Emmy. Jeffrey Tambor has taken on an immensely challenging role as Maura in Transparent. He’s now won back-to-back Emmys making him one of the most respected television actors in the business.”

Top actresses from the Lightbox catalogue also shone tonight with Orphan Black’s Tatinana Maslany winning lead actress in a drama series and the incomparable Maggie Smith winning her fourth Emmy for supporting actress in a drama series (Downton Abbey).
