Off the back of a second Silver Scroll nomination for her single “Dream”, kiwi singer-songwriter Lydia Cole shares a second single off her forthcoming album with us.
Opening into a sparse, glowing musical arrangement that burns slowly but steadily across the song’s duration, the clean and subtle delivery of “Sober”expresses an ode to coming clean; a declaration to oneself in finding meaningful human connection.
“Just want a sober exchange at the end of the day, then I’ll have nothing to blame for the way I behave.”
The single is part of a new body of work recorded, produced and engineered with the support of a successful Kickstarter campaign. More album announcement details to come soon.

Bio:
She appeared in our worlds for the first time with her debut songbook, Love Will Find A Way in 2009. It was our first insight into a young Lydia Cole’s lone voice through words and melody lines, accompanied by empathetic beds of harmony. Always the heartfelt companion, it is with vulnerability in her writing and performance that the Auckland singer-songwriter has generated a loyal following.
Lydia went on to support a number of local and international touring acts such as;
Ed Sheeran, Diana Krall, Kina Grannis, The Paper Kites, M.Ward, Brooke Fraser and Luke Thompson. Earlier this year, José González personally selected her to open for him at Auckland’s St. James Theatre, where she performed to a captivated crowd.
Following Love Will Find A Way and with a growing fan-base forming around her, Lydia went into hibernation mode for 18 months, finding solace in the long-time personal therapies of music, art and time. She emerged in 2012 with a new body of material that canvassed the bounds of love, loss and everything in between. It became her first full-length album, Me & Moon, with help of producer Nic Manders, award-winning engineer Neil Baldock of Roundhead Studios, and instrumentalists, drummer Jono Wilson and Jol Mulholland.
NZ Musician magazine called it “one of the most complete and endearing recordings heard in a long time.” Off this coveted release, came her Silver Scroll-nominated song and fan favourite, ‘Hibernate’.
This year Lydia Cole has been busy creating new material to share, with her recently crowd-funded album campaign – which reached its target in five days. At age 26, Cole moved to Kingsland, finding a deep connection to the Auckland neighbourhood. “Living up on the ridge of Kingsland gave me the big sky and distant horizon I needed to feel free, to learn, and to breathe. It made me feel more open to the world and to myself. This has made my ears and eyes larger, my heart more still, and my writing broader.”
The latest single from her new body of work is a song called ‘Dream’, which has just been nominated for the 2016 APRA Silver Scroll Award, making this her second Scroll nomination. This year’s Silver Scroll Awards will be taking place on Thursday 29th September at Auckland’s Vector Arena.
“I have never had grand schemes with my music, like to conquer the world, or to be a star,” reflects Lydia, today. “But after thirteen years of knowing that music would drive my life, I’m learning to follow the path these songs create, to follow the breath that they seem to breathe, and the spaces they open up to me.”
