UK Classical Music Supergroup Tours NZ Performing Two Concerts In Wellington
UK classical music supergroup London Conchord Ensemble heads to New Zealand in October for Chamber Music New Zealand’s final concert tour of the year and performs two concerts in Wellington.
London Conchord Ensemble performs two concerts at the Michael Fowler Centre on Thursday 13 October – a new ‘Rattles and Rhythm’ concert at 11am and an evening concert at 7.30pm.
The Rattles and Rhythm concert is new for Chamber Music New Zealand and is being trialled on this tour launching in Wellington, along with new family concerts in Dunedin and Auckland on this tour. Children aged under five years are free.
“These daytime performances offer families a chance to learn about, and experience live classical music together,” CMNZ chief executive Peter Walls said. “We know families sometimes struggle to arrange childcare and so we wanted to provide an opportunity for parents and caregivers to enjoy a performance of the same quality they would expect in an evening performance in the concert hall, but babies and children are welcome too – tears and all.”
Founded by principal players from the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Opera House, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the London Conchord Ensemble has won an international following with its fresh communicative style.
This superb collective of musicians includes 2015 CMNZ audience favourite, violinist Daniel Rowland, from the Brodsky Quartet, along with husband and wife duo Daniel Pailthorpe (flute) and Emily Pailthorpe (oboe), cellist Bartholomew LaFollette, Maximiliano Martin on clarinet, Andrea de Flammineis (bassoon), horn player Nicholas Korth and Julian Milford on piano.
The programme for the Wellington concerts include Mozart’s Quintet in E flat for piano, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon and of which the composer considered to be “the best thing I have written in my life” as well as Poulenc’s lively Sextet for Piano and Wind Quintet; and Sally Beamish’s arrangement of Debussy’s ‘La Mer’ which is said to have inspired the theme music for the film Jaws and Nine Inch Nails’ song of the same name.
A free pre-concert talk as part of the CMNZ Prelude Series will take place one hour before the concert and provides additional insights into the musicians and the programme.
Alongside the London Conchord Ensemble concert, Chamber Music New Zealand is launching its new ‘Babysitting Club’, providing a special ticket price for parents who need to pay for a babysitter to be able to attend the concert.
“We know that for parents with young children it can be a challenge to come along to our concerts with the added expense of babysitters. We wanted to find a way to make it easier,” CMNZ chief executive Peter Walls said.
The CMNZ Babysitting Club is accessible through Facebook and offers two tickets for the price of one to all CMNZ Kaleidoscopes Series concerts. Mr Walls said not only would it be a way for parents to access the special deal, but he hoped it would develop into a forum for parents and caregivers with a shared passion for music and the arts. The London Conchord Ensemble concert will also include the unveiling of the 2017 Chamber Music New Zealand Kaleidoscopes Season.
London Conchord Ensemble performs at the Michael Fowler Auditorium on Thursday 13 October at 11am and 7.30pm. Tickets are available through Ticketek www.ticketek.co.nz or phone 0800 842 538. For full tour details visit www.chambermusic.co.nz/londonconchord
