Free Public Lecture: "Consistency's Curse"
The author and teacher, Bernard Beckett, is a great admirer of modern science. As a passionate agnostic, he struggles to define a personal philosophy that might provide a grounding for our expanding understanding of the physical world, while underpinning his reluctance to commit to particular cultural mythologies.
In this address, under the auspices of the St Andrews Trust for the Study of Religion and Society, Bernard will describe his attempt to reconcile his current position, with regard to both the philosophy of science and those beliefs that sit necessarily beyond its influence. His tentative conclusion is what he calls 'collective objectivism'.
Tuesday 27 September 2016, 12:15 to 1pm, St Andrew's on The Terrace, 30 The Terrace, Wellington
Entry free. Koha welcomed.
