Battle of the Somme – Free centenary screenings with performances by the NZSO
In 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, two cinematographers risked life and limb to bring the world the first ever documentary footage of war.
One hundred years later, the British High Commission is proud to present a digitally-remastered version of the film to the public, accompanied live by the world renowned New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and supported by the Wellington City Council, Ticketek and the Royal New Zealand RSA.
The screenings are part of a series taking place around the world to commemorate the centenary of the battle.
“The remarkable restoration of this historic film provides a moving glimpse into what life on the western front must have been like. It’s occasionally hard to watch but it is a lasting testament to the courage and honour that soldiers – from all sides and nations – showed in the heat and horror of battle.”
British High Commissioner Jonathan Sinclair said.
There will be two performances at the Michael Fowler Centre Wellington held at 3pm and 7pm Saturday 24 September. Both are free to the public. The NZSO will be conducted by Simon Kenway.
Tickets can be obtained from the box office at the Michael Fowler Centre or by contacting Ticketek on 0800 TICKETEK (842 538).
In consideration of the community nature of this event, Ticketek have kindly waived all booking and delivery fees meaning that this event will be truly free.
Programmes will be available at the venue for $5, with all proceeds donated to the RSA.
