bFM Bombathon: Support Independent Media
bFM Bombathon: Support Independent Media
bFM's annual pledge drive - the Bombathon - has kicked off with a $95,000 target.
Last year the Bombathon - our first since the early 90s - raised almost $55,000 which was spend on urgently needed gear to keep us on air. This year the Bombathon is about keeping local independent media alive - a tough task when you look at the potential mergers of the big local players.
For the full week we're broadcasting from a makeshift studio in Shop 17 of St Kevins Arcade, with bands such as Mice On Stilts, Street Chant, Steve Abel, The Beths and more performing live each afternoon downstairs at The Wine Cellar (free and all welcome).
Friends from the wider bFM family such as SJD, Jed Town, Chris Stapp & She's So Rad will drop by to co-host shows, plus special live-to-air shows such as the bFM Top 10 and Freak The Sheep will broadcast from downstairs at Whammy Bar this Wednesday (also free and all welcome..)
Why are we doing this? Because the mainstream is being watered down further still. All over the industry well-established and well-funded media companies are attempting mergers and making moves that would have been considered unthinkable even five years ago. If independence, authenticity and creativity are to truly have a place in Auckland’s broadcasting future, then we need to bring the Bombathon back for good.
It’s not a magic bullet - but it gives us some breathing room while we continue to adapt to meet our updated goal; to nourish a community of independent thinkers to help shape a more interested and interesting Tāmaki Makaurau.
The 95bFM Bomabthon, from now until midnight this Sunday, 11 September.
