NZ Vegetarian Society Short Film Competition Vote Open Now

NZ Vegetarian Society Short Film Competition – People’s Choice Vote Open Now for $1000 cash for one school!

School students from all around the country have entered films highlighting animal advocacy, nutrition and health, protecting the environment and vegetarian living. This, the third year of the competition, has produced a wide variety of short films from primary, intermediate and secondary schools.

The NZ Vegetarian Society will be busy presenting the awards and prizes to the winning schools over the next few weeks.

Now the voting for the People’s Choice is open to decide the Overall Winner, which will gain one school the $1000 cash prize. It’s a great opportunity for the local community to show their support and get behind their local school.

The winner will be announced on October 1st, World Vegetarian Day, a day celebrating a way of living that reduces animal suffering, improves people’s health and protects our planet.

The film competition is a fun chance for students to learn about healthy and ethical food choices and investigate the realities and impacts behind their diets.

“Young people must ultimately decide for themselves how they will live and what they stand for, and the youth of today have a wealth of information with which to make their choices,” says Stephanie Lane, NZ Vegetarian Society National Manager. “We want to give our next generation the chance to really investigate and think about their actions, and this competition does just that.”

Wellington took out the Secondary School categories, with Naenae Clubhouse in Lower Hutt winning the Nutrition and Health category and Samuel Marsden Whitby the Animal Advocacy category. Auckland won both Intermediate prizes, with Northcross Intermediate winning the Nutrition and Health, and last year’s winner, Maja Skilling of Waikowhai Intermediate, claiming the prize for Animal Advocacy for the second year running. The Primary category had two winners – Ponsonby Primary School in Auckland and Pillans Point School in Tauranga.

“We had a great time watching the films, and some good laughs. There was stiff competition this year,” says Julia Clements, NZ Vegetarian Society President.

The competition allows students to take ownership of their food choices and explore their creativity, and has resulted in multiple promising young people winning cash and/or prizes for themselves and some to earn $1000 cash for their school by winning the People’s Choice vote.

Prizes were sponsored by Quorn, South Seas Film & Television School, Linda McCartney NZ, NewWay, The Animal Connection, Plug In Pest Free, Hell Pizza, Proper Crisps and Kiwiherb.
