Māori Music Month celebrated on Auckland’s trains
On a rainy Wednesday afternoon South
Auckland’s train passengers were treated to a performance
by local singers celebrating Māori Music Month.
On August 25 Rangipukohu Pehopa, Te Waiariki Peita, Tayler Thomson Taupo and Atea Kahukoka left Pukekohe station and travelled up to Papatoetoe to show passengers the beauty of Māori music.
Ms Peita says she wants to give Aucklanders a chance to hear music that is an important part of Māori culture.
“I think they will be really happy they get to hear how beautiful it is. People are tired after work and this is a nice way to brighten up their afternoon.”
The singers will be on Auckland’s trains every afternoon until August 31.
This is the first year for Māori Music Month, which was launched on 28 July at a Kapa Haka competition in Hawke’s Bay.
