Waitangi Day 2017 Fund Applications Now Open

Waitangi Day 2017 Fund Applications Now Open

Applications for the 2017 Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund are open and applications from groups hosting community events celebrating New Zealand identity by commemorating the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi are welcome.

“Projects run in partnership between local authorities, community groups and tangata whenua are particularly encouraged,” says David Butts, Manager Heritage Operations, Manatū Taonga.

“We welcome applications for events themed on the commemoration of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, and:

• promote nation and community building

• encourage wide community participation

• promote a cultural experience

• take place on or near Waitangi Day (6 February), or on a date significant to the signing of the Treaty in a particular community or rohe.

“During the 2016 year the Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund supported community events throughout the country held on marae, river banks and in town squares – all helping to build ties between local and national Te Tiriti o Waitangi celebrations.

“Other community events this year included multicultural festivals, a Waitangi Day Raft Race in Te Puke and a day-long festival hosted by Ngāti Whātua o Ōrākei at Takaparawhau/Bastion Point attended by some 10,000 people,” David Butts said.

Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund grants average about $3000 each and aapplications close 5pm on Monday 3 October 2016. The fund is administered by Manatū Taonga, Ministry for Culture and Heritage, PO Box 5364, Wellington 6145.
