The Government is investing $110,000 through the Major Events Development Fund in the World Junior Squash Championships to be held in Tauranga from 19 - 28 July 2017.
Under 19 squash stars from more than 30 countries will be able to compete for the men’s individual, women’s individual and the women’s teams world cup titles.
“The Government’s investment in the World Junior Squash Championships will showcase the region of Bay of Plenty and New Zealand as a world-class events destination,” says Devorah Blumberg, Manager of New Zealand Major Events.
“Events have the potential to generate a wide range of direct and indirect benefits, including tourism revenue, strong local and national pride, and the development of new infrastructure and amenities.”
It is expected that more than 400 international competitors, support staff and family members will attend the event over the 10 days of the championships.
New Zealand’s primary success in the championship event came in 1995 when Jade Wilson won the women’s individual junior title. New Zealand juniors will be looking to add to this achievement, but will face stern challenges from some of the age group’s current top ranked nations such as France, Switzerland and Germany.
The Government invests, through the Major Event Development Fund, in major events that seek to generate significant immediate and long-term benefits to New Zealand, and lift and maintain New Zealand’s international profile.
More information on the Major Events Development Fund can be found on the New Zealand Major Events website.
