CITY TALKS: Jos de Krieger — Superuse Studios

Dutch functionality, sustainability and aesthetics forge innovative orders of architecture from local waste

City Talks return to City Gallery Wellington’s Adam Auditorium for the second series of events in August, welcoming Dutch architect and partner of Rotterdam-based Superuse Studios, Jos de Krieger, to speak on how they turn available flows and resources into urban ecosystems.

Pioneers in the field of sustainable design, Superuse Studios researches, designs and builds innovative products, interiors and buildings and develops strategies for smart urban transformations. The firm is renowned nationally and internationally for its innovative design approach as well as for providing ‘open source’ methods and tools to the design community. They think ingenious, beautiful and functional architectural and social design solutions can be created using existing resources, materials and systems — everything is already there, we just have to see and utilise it. In this way, Superuse Studios operate with the aim to make effective use of frequently wasted resources and energy, limiting the environmental impact of architecture and design.

Since 2006, Jos de Krieger has been working in the field of architecture, especially innovative architecture and design made from leftover and waste materials. After his graduation at TU Delft he joined Superuse Studios (former 2012Architecten) to push the boundaries of architecture beyond traditional building methods into cyclical processes.

City Talks is an ongoing series initiated by the New Zealand Institute of Architects Wellington Branch and presented in partnership with City Gallery Wellington. Its purpose is to foster discussion about architecture for a broader audience in a city that cares about urbanity.

Jos de Krieger’s visit to New Zealand is supported by Te Pūtahi — Christchurch centre for architecture & city-making and Warren Trust as part of the development of FESTA 2016, a biennial weekend celebration of urban creativity in Christchurch that takes place over Labour Weekend, 21-24 October.
