MEDIA RELEASE – 5 July 2016
Iwi to hold second specialist whaikōrero/karanga wānanga
Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Inc. is excited to again facilitate the specialist whaikōrero/karanga wānanga, Whakamana i Te Pae o Huaki-pōuri being hosted at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Wairarapa from 21 to 24 July 2016. This intense four day training session caters for all levels of proficiency and skill, with a beginner, medium and high fluency level.
Director of Te Reo, Tikanga & Mātauranga, Jeremy Tātere MacLeod commented: “This wānanga is aimed at preserving the sacred arts of whaikōrero and karanga upon the 86 plus Ngāti Kahungunu marae. It investigates contemporary issues surrounding the application of tikanga and kawa, and also delves into many other practices that have long been dormant on Ngāti Kahungunu marae such as the pao, harihari kai, parekawakawa and ngeri. This intense training course caters for all levels of expertise and utilizes some of the nation’s most prolific whaikōrero and karanga exponents.”
These wānanga have proved hugely successful in the past and provide a high quality world class opportunity to learn the sacred arts of whaikōrero and karanga including many other aspects of tikanga and kawa on Ngāti Kahungunu marae. Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated is pleased to be able to provide our people with this opportunity through financial assistance from Creative New Zealand which has ensured that this wānanga is of minimal cost.
The cost is koha for registration, accommodation and meals. There is also a $20.00 charge for workbooks.
