New Zealand’s largest and longest running short film competition is back for it’s 14th wildly successful year.
The newly named HP48HOURS is now back and stronger than ever. The renowned national guerrilla filmmaking competition
continues to get entrants from far and wide, from school students to professionals, to teams of mates who just want to
spend a mad weekend going ape together. Two of NZ’s most successful filmmakers have both previously endorsed the event
with Taika Waititi (Hunt for The Wilderpeople) saying of his time participating in the event -
“You never have that amount of fun and freedom in any other filmmaking environment. It is really good for creativity”.
Sir Peter Jackson the competition’s Wildcard judge made note of the events ability to uncover great talent in the
Ministerial review of the New Zealand Film Commission that
“The 48HOURS organisers, have the knowledge about who the passionate and skilled new filmmakers are.”
This year the event has formed a long-term partnership with HP, a company known as the real power behind the film
industry. Event organiser Ant Timpson was over the moon about the new relationship with HP stating that –
“We are incredibly excited about working with HP and showcasing the next generation of filmmaking talent. HP are the
power behind the scenes of the industry and it’s a major step forward for the competition to have them onboard”.

Early bird registrations for New Zealand’s largest filmmaking competition were open from July 1st but only last til July
30. The shoot weekend is set for Sept 16th, and when the clock strikes 7pm on the friday over 10,000 people nationwide
will begin their 48 hour odyssey to write, shoot and edit a short film to put them in the running for becoming Grand
National Champion. Thousands of dollars in cash and prizes are on the line for the best of the best.
As always, HP48HOURS is about unearthing the next great storytellers of NZ and igniting their passion for filmmaking.
There is a good chance they are still likely to still be at school. To help encourage more than just 1 team to enter
from a school, all school teams from around New Zealand get two team entries for the price of one.
