Internationally renowned kiwi choreographers debut new works
Footnote New Zealand Dance presents Transfer; a double bill comprised of two new contemporary dance works from esteemed New Zealand choreographers Jeremy Nelson (New York) and Joshua Rutter (Berlin).
Currently working as Associate Arts Professor at the Dance Department of New York’s Tisch School of the Arts, Jeremy Nelson is back in Wellington to share his love of dance with people in New Zealand.
“After time and travel in the dance world, you try to develop your own interests and ways of communicating.” Jeremy says. “By focusing on the language of the body, you create a distinct perspective as well as incorporating the individual qualities of the dancers you are working with. It’s the language of physicality. Passing this process on is the gift of teaching and choreography. I’ve shared my process with Footnote and now they’ll share it with with audiences.”
Joshua Rutter returns to New Zealand from working in Berlin to present Tomorrow After All, a dance piece that draws inspiration from internet worlds. He wants people to enjoy the physicality of the bodies on stage, and says “I invite the audience to soak in the details and feel the atmosphere, to delight in the peculiar”. A large black object that influences the movement on stage is one intriguing element of this performance, which has been described as an ode to virtual environments.
Both international choreographers have spent weeks rehearsing in Wellington with Footnote.
“Bringing exceptional artists back to New Zealand to create new work always enriches the local dance landscape. The Footnote dancers get to work with, and be inspired by, these singular voices, and audiences have the chance to view work crafted and presented by New Zealanders who have been making their mark on the world… without having to travel overseas to experience it.” Richard Aindow, General Manager.
Opening in Auckland on 29 June and touring to Wellington on July 6. Tickets are on sale now and are expected to sell out. Visitfootnote.org.nz for ticketing information.
