Armstrong to Race in New Ok Class in Portugal This Weekend

Young kiwi kart ace Marcus Armstrong will return to his direct drive karting roots at the third round of this year's CIK-FIA European Karting Championships in Portugal this weekend.

The 15-year-old works Tony Kart driver from Christchurch moved to the 6-speed gearbox/125cc KZ class this year. But with a month to go before the final round of the 2016 European KZ class championship at Genk in Belgium the former New Zealand champion has taken the opportunity to contest the third round of the 2016 OK class title chase this weekend.

The OK class is an evolution of the KF class Armstrong contested with success in Europe last year, and the young Kiwi says he is looking forward to the change.

"Yes this is a one off race for us, but it's going to be exciting, with no front brakes, push start and much lighter than last year's KF. Portimao is a nice track, very long straight with about 15secs of full throttle. We have two days of extra testing for this event so I'm sure we'll be in a good place for when racing begins," he said yesterday.

Armstrong (Tony Kart/Vortex/Vega) is one of two drivers from the KZ class contesting the OK class this weekend (the other is Spanish Praga driver Jorge Pescador) and is part of a field of 41.

Leading the way is 2016 series points leader and reigning world champion Karol Basz (Kosmic/Vortex/Vega) from junior world champion Logan Sargeant (FA Kart/Vortex/Vega) and the 2013 KF class world champion Tom Joyner (Zanardi/Parilla/Vega).
