On Saturday, Parihaka was invaded by Pakeha this week, but unlike the sacking in 1881, this time it’s supporters of New Plymouth mayor Andrew Judd wanting a conversation about how Maori can be represented in the affairs of the province. In Korero Mai Ki Ahau, Parihaka identity Ruakere Hond talks to Eruera Morgan about what lies below the message of peace preached by Te Whiti and Tohu, and what the small coastal Taranaki settlement thinks of the latest influx of manuhiri.
On Sunday, The Government has offered Teina Pora $2.5 million compensation for the 21 years he was locked up for a murder he didn’t commit. That sum has been widely criticised by lawyers and others as unrealistic for his future needs and out of step with past compensation settlements with other victims of injustice who happened to be Pakeha. Activist Tame Iti has some recent experience of the justice system and tells Eruera Morgan $10 million for Teina Pora would be fair compensation.
Korero Mai Ki Ahau a half hour features programme every Saturday and Sunday from noon, which takes an in – depth look at issues affecting te ao Maori. Totally in te reo Maori brought to you by Waatea News in association with Te Mangai Paho.
