Former Kiwi Ferns captain Nadene Conlon has been appointed the first full-time Kiwis team manager for their build-up to next year’s Rugby League World Cup.
Previously NZRL national operations manager, Conlon will now focus on the NZ men’s programme, currently ranked #1 in the world, as well as taking responsibility for manager education through the rugby league community.
“Nadene fulfills the role's requirements of having a high performance background, good administration and logistical skills, rugby league knowledge and she understands building a team culture,” says NZRL interim chief executive Alex Hayton.
“She has also proven herself to be an outstanding administrator and thoroughly deserves the opportunity to take a leadership role with our flagship programme, working closely with coach Stephen Kearney, the players and support staff.”
As a player, Conlon was a member of the inaugural NZ women’s team in 1995, captained them to the victory at the first women’s World Cup in 2000 and was also part of the victorious 2003 World Cup side.
Subsequently, she has filled key administrative roles with both New Zealand Rugby League and the NZ Warriors.
“I’m obviously thrilled to get the job. It is a breakthrough in a male-dominated sport.
"I think a woman does tend to think differently and perhaps bring additional attributes to the team environment.
"It’s exciting to be part of something so fantastic and I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead.”
The Kiwis’ next fixture is a one-off test against Australia in Perth on October 15, then they head to the northern hemisphere to defend their Four Nations crown against the Kangaroos, England and Scotland.
