International cricket returns to Nelson

The Blackcaps are set to return to Nelson with
two back-to-back One Day International (ODI) cricket matches
scheduled here for the upcoming 2016/17 season.
The Blackcaps will take on Bangladesh at Saxton Oval in the 2nd and 3rd ANZ ODIs on 29 and 31 December. The two games are part of a three-match series, with Nelson hosting the deciding fixtures.
A further ODI has been confirmed in Nelson for the 2017/18 season, with the Blackcaps taking on Pakistan. Nelson will also host a three-day warm-up game between Pakistan and a New Zealand selection team on November 11-13 this year.
Mayor Rachel Reese says these match announcements show Nelson’s long term commitment to hosting international cricket.
“The opportunity to host international cricket at home is testament to our world class venues.
“Nelson has continued to build on the momentum from the success of hosting the Cricket World Cup and last season’s one day internationals.
“Hosting these games at Saxton Oval is a chance to further consolidate our place on the international circuit and showcase our city to the world.
“Of course, we have worked closely with Nelson Cricket and I’d like to thank them for their extremely hard work to secure these matches. Not only do these events provide an opportunity for locals to see great cricket here at home, but it also provides significant economic benefits to the region.”
David Leonard, General Manager of the Nelson Cricket Association says the hard work has paid off.
“It’s great to be welcoming back the Blackcaps to Saxton Oval this season. There are a lot of great venues around the country all vying for these matches so to have New Zealand Cricket award these matches here really recognises Saxton as an international venue.
“Hosting an international team for a three day fixture at Saxton is a step in proving the venue in longer format cricket.
“We’re looking forward to some exciting cricket, with a venue having a reputation being one of the best in the country I’m sure it will be a great day out,” he says.
New Zealand Cricket CEO David White says, “Playing cricket over New Year’s in Nelson is a perfect fit for us and we’re delighted to announce another double header to round out 2016.
“Nelson Cricket’s done a fantastic job turning Saxton Oval into a world class facility and it's a venue the players love to play at."
