Lightbox’s Preacher second most popular TV show in NZ
Lightbox’s Preacher second most popular TV show in NZ on debut
New data from independent television audience on demand analytics company Parrot Analytics shows that Lightbox exclusive Preacher was one of the most talked about television shows in New Zealand earlier this week.
Parrot Analytics, a kiwi start-up providing global, media cross-platform TV content analytics, measures the number of online streams, downloads, mentions in social media, and online searches where the demand for shows creates an aggregated “in-demand” measure of a show’s popularity -– regardless of whether it is primarily available via traditional free or pay TV, or via subscription video services such as Lightbox.
Using the analysis, Lightbox confirmed the popularity of its new exclusive show Preacher, which began streaming this week. It rocketed to the top two most talked about shows in New Zealand, with 460,000 of Parrot Analytics’ Demand Expressions™. Game of Thrones, now its sixth season, holds position number one.
Preacher is a new series developed by Breaking Bad writer Sam Catlin alongside Seth Rogen (Knocked up, Superbad) and Evan Goldberg. The show stars Dominic Cooper as the small town Texas preacher, who gains special powers and goes on a mission to find God with help from his ex, Tulip, his mad Irish mate and a host of characters who have to be seen to be believed.
Forbes revealed that is first episode “is everything you’re not supposed to do on TV, with a mix of dark humour, profanity, blasphemy, gore and general weirdness”.
Two other long-standing Lightbox exclusive shows also made the top 10, with Outlander at number eight and Vikings at ten.
Lightbox CEO, Kym Niblock said that the figures show that streaming is rapidly becoming the new normal for many New Zealanders.
“When three of the top 10 TV shows are only available online and together make up nearly one million online views and interactions by New Zealanders, you know people’s behaviour is changing. These new figures from Parrot really reinforce what we’ve been seeing – Kiwis are abandoning traditional TV viewing habits as online options like Lightbox become easier to use and have content that people want to watch.
“We’re blown away with New Zealand’s reception to Preacher – not only is it receiving much critical acclaim, but it’s clearly struck a chord with a huge number of New Zealanders.
