“Krystal Harvey’s weak sentence just endorses how out of touch New Zealand’s Justice System really is but is symbolic of New Zealand’s horrific level of child abuse”. Guthrie.
Auckland mother Krystal Harvey who sold footage of herself performing oral sex on her own baby son has been given a jail term after the Crown appealed her original sentence of home detention but could still be free in 11 short months’ time.
Harvey, 23, who was sentenced in January to eight months home detention and given 100 hours community service after pleading guilty to sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and making an objectionable publication.
"The breach of trust was "at the highest level a mother could be involved with" Judge Phil Recordon Manukau District Court.
Sensible Sentencing Trust’s National Spokesperson for Child Abuse, Scott Guthrie, says, “This sentence is offensive to the victim and the victim’s family and is in line with the weak absurd out of touch sentences New Zealand is being forced to accept by some of its highest ranking Judges.”
“Justice Wylie clearly indicated the original sentence was concerning and inappropriate but only to do a complete u-turn on that statement and hand out a sentence just as concerning. This so called mother committed a crime against her own baby son being the worst of its kind and yet still she walks away with a slap on the wrist. What about the children of this country? and what about justice”.
Mr Guthrie said, “There are children being raped and murdered on a weekly basis in this country and what are the Judges doing about it? Nothing. Where is the strong message of deterrence being sent here? Judges are supposed to be the pillars of our community and the gate keepers of society but again and again they repeatedly let us down”.
“This case once again exposes a justice system that is excessively offender friendly and ignorant of the ramifications to the victim and wider community It is little wonder New Zealand has an eascalting crime and violence problem. Our Judges are sanctioning it.”
