Top Clubs Due to Descend on Masterton

24 of the best Club Teams from around New Zealand will be descending on Masterton over Queen’s Birthday weekend with the Cousins Shield and Mitchell Cup event. This will be the largest number of teams seen at this event for a number of years. Highly sought after, these awards have been contested since 1948 (Cousins Shield) and 1958 (Mitchell Cup).

In the Men’s draw 15 teams will be competing with the SquashWays club from Christchurch take out the top spot and will be looking to make this the third year in the row they have claimed the title. The SquashWays team is headed by current World Number 37 Paul Coll. The Herne Bay Squash Club number 1 Men’s team are seeded second with Thorndon and Devoy Squash and Fitness rounding out the top 4 teams. Other notable names in the Men’s competition include World Ranked number 151 Ben Grindrod who will compete for the Devoy Squash and Fitness Centre, Evan Williams who is playing for Thorndon Squash Club and Lance Beddoes who is competing for the Henderson Squash club. Nine international players competing in the June PSA series will also be in attendance at this event bringing an international flair.

In the Women’s draw 9 teams will be competing with it set to be a tough race between them all. Remuera the 2015 winners will be looking to go back to back with import Nele Gillis who holds a World Ranking of 44 leading the team. They will be set to have a tough battle against second seeds North Shore who are headed by former World Number 6 Shelley Kitchen and also the third seeds Royal Oak who are headed by Amanda Landers-Murphy who holds a current world ranking of 49. SquashGym Palmerston North round out the top 4 women’s teams.

The Masterton Squash Club will be the main venue for this weekend of top squash but they will be well supported by the Red Star Squash Club throughout the weekend. Games start at 2pm on Friday 3rd June with finals scheduled for 1pm Sunday.
