Māori Television leading the way with New Zealand content
A new report released by NZ on Air has revealed that Māori Television continues to lead the way as the largest
free-to-air provider of local content in prime time for 2015.
The Local Content New Zealand Television report was released this morning and showed NZ content made up 82 per cent of
Māori Television’s prime time hours, which was comparative with 51 per cent for TV One and 50 per cent of TV3’s prime
time hours.
Chief Executive Paora Maxwell said, “We pride ourselves on producing quality shows that tell stories from a uniquely
Aotearoa perspective.
“The look, feel and entertainment factor of programmes remain fundamental to growing the number and regularity of Māori
Television viewers.”
The report also showed Māori Television was largely responsible for a 2.4 per cent increase in local content across the
free-to-air broadcasters researched. These included ONE, TV2, TV3, FOUR, Prime and Māori Television. This increase
translated to 298 more hours of local content.
Of the six broadcasters, Māori Television screened the largest amount of documentary programming, broadcasting 555 hours
of documentaries.
Additionally the amount of drama and comedy on Māori Television doubled in 2015. This included first-run programmes such
as My Country Song, Find Me a Māori Bride and Te Matatini Festival.
A large sports provider, Māori Television screened more than 127 hours of Rugby League in 2015 and for the second year
hosted the free-to-air Vodafone Warriors matches.
