Jets Basketball Holiday Camp happening 18-20 April, Arena Manawatu
The Jets are excited to announce the first Jets Basketball Holiday Camp for 2016 to be held on the 18th, 19th and 20th of April.
The three day camp will be open to children aged between 7 and 16. Running from 9am until 3pm daily, this holiday camp will focus on skill development for all levels.
The Jets community coach Miles Pearce will be leading a team of knowledgeable, talented and fun coaches to build on the skills already being taught by Miles in our local primary schools during term time.
The confirmation of this holiday camp to be held at Arena Manawatu has been the culmination of a long process of strategic and operational review being made within The Jets organisation. The strategic review, undertaken in November 2015, lead to the board’s decision to not field a team in the 2016 NBL season.
The strategic review held in conjunction with key stakeholders including Sport Manawatu, Manawatu Rugby Union representatives, Palmerston North City Council and Arena Manawatu, identified the requirement to use 2016 to refocus on delivering community basketball programs designed to provide pathways. The review critically identified the requirement that the Jets organisation must establish a business model which provides for financial sustainability, and importantly reduces the reliance on ever declining sources of community trust funding.
‘Our intention for the 2016 season has been to focus on The Jets community involvement, building on the work we are doing with community coaching in primary schools and working with Palmerston North Basketball Association to develop clear pathways for youth to excel at basketball in the Manawatu and ultimately nationally or internationally’ said Richard Hansen Jets Chairman.
The Jets Community Coaching programme which works within local primary schools and is in pilot phase in a number of secondary schools, is supported by our a team of sponsors including Breakers Restaurant, Spark Business Hub, UCOL, Fly Palmy, New World Melodys, Courtesy Ford and GSA Design, businesses who see the potential of Basketball in the Manawatu and want to help support the development of clear pathways for children from primary school right the way through to the NBL and beyond.
‘We want to thank the wider community for their ongoing support, which has strengthened the board’s resolve to ensure the future of The Jets is strong for generations to come, this first Jets Holiday Camp is the first exciting step in the process’ said Richard Hansen.
