How Kiwis Like their Eggs
Poached eggs most popular, eaters more likely to be outgoing and happier.
The Coffee Club has run an Easter survey to find out just how New Zealanders like their eggs. In the survey, 37.5% said
that their favourite way to eat eggs is by having them poached.
Readers of national newspapers mainly opted for scrambled with 28.6% choosing this method over the 21.4% who preferred
poached. Readers of women’s magazines tended to go for poached (67%), while those that read food magazine favoured eggs
Benedict (52%).
“It doesn’t surprise me to see that poached eggs are the most popular, as our own customers buy thousands of poached egg
dishes every week,” explains Andy Lucas, Director and Marketing Manager of The Coffee Club New Zealand. “We thought it
was likely to be that or scrambled eggs, which came out as the second favourite way for people to have their eggs."
According to a recent study in the UK, how people like their eggs can even reveal things about their personality and
status. Researchers found that those who like their eggs poached are outgoing, listen to upbeat music and are happier.
They are also more likely to have two children and no more than one sibling and are more likely to be a woman than a
man.
Scrambled egg eaters on the other hand are more likely to be in managerial or senior-level jobs and to own their own
home. They are also more guarded.
The Coffee Club survey revealed that over 50% of Kiwis eat eggs two times a week or more. This is supported by The
Coffee Club’s own sales figures. In the year from March 2015 to February 2016, over 1.2 million Henergy SPCA approved
eggs were used in their stores, and they use an average of 2.3 eggs for every minute of the day.
“Kiwis love their eggs, which is why they make up such a large part of our breakfast and brunch menu,” says Andy. “It’s
clear from these survey results that their popularity isn’t going to wane anytime soon!”
