Four Auckland arts charities benefit from Kiwi generosity
Four Auckland arts charities each raised more than $10,000 for their cause at The Funding Network’s latest event.
Often described as “Dragon’s Den for charities”, TFN is a social event at which generous Kiwis pledge anything from $50 to $5,000 to their favourites amongst the four charities pitching for funds.
In Auckland last week, the four charities to share the $42,000 raised in under an hour were:
• Mixit - a multi-cultural platform where young people with refugee backgrounds mix it up with local and migrant youth.
• Māpura Studios - an accessible, inclusive creative space offering innovative, person-centred visual arts learning and art therapy programmes.
• Mind Over Manner - a specialist workshop designed to encourage better communication for individuals who experience sensory processing differences or alternate cognitive responses.
• The Circability Trust – inclusive circus programmes for all ages and abilities, with a focus on disabled people, to build confidence, social inclusion and achievement.
Each group had six minutes to pitch their organisation and another six minutes to answer questions, after which the pledging from the crowd began.
“With circus performers on stilts, actors, refugee youth leaders and stroke victims in the room, it was both a fun and moving evening. The four charities all did an amazing job and we had a real sense of theatre in the room,” says Hilary Sumpter, CEO of the Auckland Communities Foundation, which helps run The Funding Network.
The AUT Business School, The Gift Trust, The Macquarie Group Foundation and Macquarie Private Wealth NZ are key supporters of The Funding Network, with the Macquarie Group Foundation matching a third of the funds pledged on the night.
“It was a privilege to once again support TFN NZ and help New Zealanders share in what was a remarkable evening of giving back to some very deserving and original charities,” says Laurence Fitzpatrick, Head of Macquarie Private Wealth NZ.
