African Film Festival NZ 2016 ~ April 7-13

African Film Festival NZ 2016 ~ April 7-13 ~ Rialto Cinemas Newmarket

Last year's inaugural African Film Festival New Zealand (held at Rialto Cinemas, Newmarket) was so well-received and so successful that the volunteer organising team was encouraged to go ahead with the plan to make it an annual event. This year's Festival will take place from 7th to 13th April at the same venue.

The guiding principles behind the festival are threefold: (1) to improve New Zealand audiences' understanding and appreciation of 21st Century African cultures through the medium of film, at the same time challenging some of the negative stereotypes so often presented; (2) to help foster positive cultural relations and mutual tolerance among the many and diverse communities of Auckland; (3) to broaden and expand the current roster of cinema festivals by introducing films from and about the continent of Africa.

The AFFNZ is delighted to have the support of an impressive list of iconic patrons and sponsors. (Full details on the website). One of our patrons, Witi Ihimaera, wrote, last year : “Expect provocation, revelation and passion. Be assured of boldness, vibrancy, and vitality. Expect to come away visually enriched, and understanding, just a little better, some of the profound geographies and experiences of African people who now live in many New Zealand communities.”

Those words apply equally to this year's list of films, compiled in co-operation with other African film festivals around the world. The New Zealand African Film Festival is very much a labour of love for its organisers, but it cannot be sustained long-term without the continued support of Auckland film-lovers. Check out the programme with this information fresh in your minds and buy your tickets well in advance!
